Merbau grows in coastal regions and inland lowland forests, up to 850 meters altitude. Flowers are pollinated by insects. The leaves is food plants for caterpillars of the moth, Cossus chloratus. Merbau is reproduced by seeds. To fasten and ensure the germination, the seed skin should be injured and soaked overnight before sow it in a polybag. When it is watered daily, the seed may germinate within a week.
