Petai belalang grows well up to 1000 meters elevation. Grow well on open space and often found as one of the pioneer species on the disturb land. As species of Fabaceae, petai belalang is green manure which the root is associated with bradyrhizobium to fix nitrogen.

Petai belalang is susceptible to infestation of Heteropsylla cubana - a small aphid-like sucking insect-pests.

The plant is propagated by seeds. The seeds can be disseminated by wind as the pod explode when matured and dried. Bird and squirrel also disperse the seeds. When the seed coat (testa) has already hardened, the seeds need to be soaked in hot water prior sowing into polybag.
