Cempedak thrives in lowland areas below 500 meters in elevation within primary or disturbed forests, and can also be found in acidic swamp areas. The tree blooms year-round, but the fruiting season occures inthe middle of the year. Female flower heads are exclusively found on cauliflorous shoots, while most male heads grow on shoots located on the outer edges of the canopy. This arrangement may aid in wind pollination, despite the sticky pollen. Insects are attracted to the scented male inflorescence, as the female flowers do not produce nectar. Monkeys and squirrels are fond of half-ripe fruit. The tree is typically propagated by seed and begins bearing fruit after 3-6 years, or 2-4 years for clonal plants.
