Ptychosperma macarthurii, commonly referred to as the MacArthur Palm, can be found in the Cape York Peninsula of Queensland, with isolated populations in the Northern Territory and New Guinea. The genus name, derived from Greek: Ptychos (folde); Sperma (seed) in reference to its grooved seeds. The specific epithet honors William MacArthur of New South Wales, a respected vigneron and botanist.

Ptychosperma macarthurii belongs to the Arecaceae family, which was established to support Jussieu's proposal in 1789 regarding the order Palmae. The Arecaceae family was formally recognized by Berchtold and Presl in 1820. Count Friedrich Carl Eugen Vsemir von Berchtold, Baron von Ungarschitz, a German-speaking Bohemian physician and botanist of Austrian descent, played a key role in the establishment of this family. Jan Svatopluk Presl, a Czech botanist and co-author of the important Czech taxonomic reference book O Přirozenosti Rostlin, was also honored for his contributions. His brother, Karel Bořivoj Presl, was also a renowned botanist. The Czech Botanical Society pays tribute to the Presl brothers by naming its principal publication after them – Preslia.
