Sterculia foetida is native to Borneo, Java, Sumatra, Peninsular Malaysia, and the Philippines, where it is commonly referred to as kelumpang. Due to its palmate leaves, it is also known as kelumpang jari.

The name Sterculia foetida, encompassing both genus and species, was introduced in 1753 by the illustrious Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus. The genus name Sterculia is derived from Latin, alluding to the Roman deity Stercutus, or Sterculius, the god of manure, which relates to the unpleasant odor associated with the flowers of this plant. Meanwhile, the species name foetida specifically denotes the foul scent of the blooms. Thus, both the genus and species names aptly reflect the character of the flowers, known for their offensive aroma.
Sterculia foetida belongs to the Malvaceae family, which derives its name from the vernacular plant name malva that was later adopted as a genus epithet. The classification of Malvaceae was proposed by Antoine Laurent de Jussieu, a French physician and botanist known for his groundbreaking book Genera Plantarum in 1789. This book is considered to be the first natural classification of flowering plants, encompassing 94 families, of which 67 are still in use today. Jussieu's classification was influenced by the extensive unpublished work of his uncle, the botanist Bernard de Jussieu.
